Vacuum Devices. Many type of suction devices have been developed and used to collect insects and related arthropods (see the section on Aspirators). Hand-held battery-operated vacuums can remove spiders, mosquitoes and insects found in the home, and a few of these can be adapted to become collection tools (as advertized in sales catalogs and distributed by some airline companies). Larger vacuum devices, called Backpack Aspirators, are commercially available that utilize gasoline or electric motors to create suction. These devices can remove insects and other debris from crops or turf grass. There have even been some huge tractor-mounted vacuum devices developed and tested for insect control in Californian strawberry fields!
