Collembola

1. Order Collembola (springtails). Look for springtails in natural habitats, like leaf mold, damp soil and rotting logs. They can often be found in the saucers underneath potted house plants. They can also be found by placing a sheet of white paper on the ground. Springtails will jump onto the paper. They can be picked up with a wetted fine (camel hair) brush and preserved in alcohol. Springtails can also be extracted from leaves and soil using a Berlese funnel. This device is a funnel suspended above a jar of alcohol with a light suspended above the funnel. Light and heat drive springtails and other small organisms (mites, symphyla, etc.) down the funnel where they fall into the alcohol in which they are killed and preserved.
