Order Thysanoptera (thrips)

119. WESTERN FLOWER THRIPS, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande). Thrips can be collected by beating flowers onto a piece of paper and looking for tiny walking dashes (“-“). The can be collected with a small paint brush and preserved in alcohol.

120. ONION THRIPS, Thrips tabaci Lindeman. Winged adult thrips can be attracted to yellow sticky traps. Adults and nymphs can be beaten onto off-white cards from host plants (particularly from wild flowers) or collected directly using an aspirator or fine paint brush soaked in alcohol. They can be killed and preserved in alcohol or mounted on microscope slides for identification.

CUBAN LAUREL THRIPS, Gynailothrips ficorum (Marchal). All stages can be collected from infested foliage using a fine brush and preserved in alcohol.
